WHY CLUTTER IS BAD FOR YOUR WELLBEING (& WHAT TO DO ABOUT IT))

Clutter can be a real problem in the home, not just in terms of physical space, but psychologically and emotionally as well. Indeed, some experts refer to clutter as unmade decisions and unprocessed emotions. Both of which make a lot of sense if you think about it! The good news is that most of us don’t need endless hours of therapy to deal with clutter. Instead, it’s just a matter of finding the motivation to clear it and to keep things clutter-free. A topic you can get some advice on below.

Get real

First off, before you can clear clutter, you have to get real. What that means is you need to be honest with yourself, about the things you really need, and the things that you don’t. Yes, you may have boxes of craft supplies, overflowing with goodies, but if you don’t have a specific project planned for them, one that you will pick up in the next six months, you’re just wasting space in your home.

In fact, getting real can work for just about everything inside your home. After all, for everything you keep, you will need to use valuable resources, including space, as well as the time and effort to keep it organised and clean. Therefore, if you have no clear plan for something, it’s much better to get rid of it altogether.

Increase your storage space

Clutter can happen for two reasons. The first is that we have too many possessions. While the second is that we don’t have enough space to correctly organise and store our possessions. Of course, in reality, household clutter problems are usually a mix of the two, but this does mean that you can help alleviate your issues by adding more storage.

There are plenty of options for doing this as well, including buying storage cubes and shelves or using over door hangers. You may wish to lease a storage unit too. The reason being that you can keep both small and larger items there, while you decide whether to keep them or not.

Create a maybe place

On the topic of making the decision to keep an item or not, it can be a brilliant idea to create ‘maybe place’ in your house. This is a box or basket that is out of sight, and it also needs to be self-contained. After all, not every item you want to get rid of should go in there. Just the ones that you are unsure about.
Then you can use this, by adding items that you are not yet ready to say goodbye to, but don’t really need in your home either. The idea being that after a month, you can go back to the box and see that you haven’t really missed them at all, and so can donate or throw them away without regret.

Commit to being clutter-free

It’s not enough to get rid of your clutter, you also need strategies that will help your home stay that way. In particular, the ‘one in one’ out policy can be useful here. That is whenever you buy a new item, you have to get rid of an old one. Something that can help clutter and stress from building back up in your home.
