HOW TO START A HOME-BASED BUSINESS AS A PARENT

Starting a home-based business as a parent comes with its own set of unique challenges and considerations. You’ll need to ensure you balance the needs of your business with your responsibilities as a parent, for one thing, and you’re going to have to put some special measures in place to ensure you can do it all. However, it’s important to remember that it can be done, so keep reading to find out how.

Get Support

Something that will always be difficult is trying to start a business as a parent and not having any support. With no help at all, you will find that you simply have too much to do and that you have to compromise somewhere. Since you can’t (and wouldn’t want to) compromise on taking care of your family, it’s your business that will ultimately suffer.

Having support behind you, whether it’s a partner, friends and family, a good childcare arrangement, a mentor, or anyone else, will mean that you can move forward with your business ideas because you’ll have the time and energy to put into it. Plus, when you have good support around you, you’ll feel more confident and be more motivated to succeed.

Have A Flexible Schedule

If there is one thing all parents know, it’s that they have to be as flexible as possible to ensure their children are taken care of in the right way. Therefore, design a schedule that allows you to be flexible in your business as well as in your life with your children. Make sure you allocate time to both sides of your life and that you can do everything you need to do. If things have to change, have a positive attitude and always have a contingency plan to ensure you can keep going and that you can still hit deadlines and help customers, as well as be there for your children when they need you.

One great idea to help with this is to use your child’s naptime and bedtime (depending on their age, of course) to maximise your productivity. You can also use technology to help you. There are scheduling apps that might be useful, you can use Zoom instead of having to travel to meet people face to face, and if you add live chat to website, you can ensure that your customers get help even if you’re not available.

Create A Child-Friendly Workspace

If you can’t have a separate place to work at home because your children are too young to be left unsupervised or you simply don’t have the space for one, make sure that where you do work is as child-friendly as possible.

You can set up a small play area in the corner, for example, and make sure there are all kinds of activities and toys to keep the little one entertained while you work. Not only can you keep an eye on them, but you’ll probably get more work done too. Just make sure to play with them from time to time – this will make them happy, relax you, and help to strengthen your bond.
