SIGNS THAT YOUR WINDOWS NEED REPLACING
Over time windows will lose their efficiency and need attention or even replacing. On average, windows need replacing every 15 to 20 years, more often if they develop faults.
But how do you know when to replace your windows or repair them? Firstly, you should make sure your windows are clean to identify any issues quickly. Whether you hire window cleaning professionals or clean them yourself, this should be something you do regularly.
There will be minor telltale signs of buildup, but knowing what to look for can alert you to the possibility that your windows are past their prime.
Condensation appears
One sign that you need new windows is condensation appearing on the inside of the window. This occurs when the weather changes and the temperature outside doesn’t equalise with the temperature inside. Old or improperly sealed windows will have this problem, while newer windows won’t.
If you notice condensation appearing on your window, you’ll need to have it replaced before it ruins your paint and other surfaces. If you do not replace your window, a buildup of moisture could result in mould and mildew infections that can spread to other areas in your house.
Cracks
Cracks in the window can indicate that your windows need replacing. Once a windowpane has sustained damage, it will continue to deteriorate until it is no longer fit for purpose. If you notice any cracks in your windows get them replaced immediately.
Increased energy bills
The first sign that your windows are past their prime is if you’re noticing a sudden increase in your energy bills. This could be because the seals on your windows have started to wear and tear, so more cold or warm air is seeping through. This will cause you to use more energy to keep up with the temperature inside.
Another way it can happen is if there are cracks in your window seal, which again means more warm or cold air can come through. It will take more energy for the rest of your home to stay at a comfortable temperature.
And finally, your old windows may be less efficient than new ones and need replacing. This may mean that their insulation has deteriorated over time, making them less effective in keeping heat or coolness out of the house.
You can hear more outside noise
One of the most common signs that your windows need to be replaced is hearing more outside noise. This is a sign that you may need to replace your windows. The reason is that the sealant between the glass has deteriorated, allowing sound waves to enter and exit through the windowpane.
This can be determined by installing some insulation near your window and then listening for noise from outside. You should be able to hear at least 50 percent less noise.
If you are still experiencing noise from outside, you should consider replacing your windows with newer ones with better insulation and seals.
Difficulty opening and closing them
One of the telltale signs your windows may need replacement is if they are difficult to open and close. Windows that are difficult to open may have a warped frame, casings, or sashes. If you have trouble closing them, it could indicate that they are warped.
