5 THINGS EVERY PREGNANT TRAVELLER SHOULD KNOW

We really love travelling as a family, especially on adventure holidays – it’s an amazing way to make memories and spend time together somewhere other than our own home.

But what about before you’re blessed with your first baby – when you’re pregnant and want to spend some time with your other half before your little hurricane comes and changes your life? Here are five things every pregnant traveller should know.

What are the benefits of travelling while pregnant?

Whether you opt for a babymoon to celebrate the fact that you are going to be parents soon, or decide to do that trip you’ve been putting off for years, there are so many reasons to travel while pregnant. It’s a great way to make some memories to look back on fondly when you are struggling with 3am feeds, and relax a little during what can be a very stressful time.

When is best to go?

When booking your break, you need to think about where in your pregnancy you’re going to be. For example, in the first trimester, you’re likely to feel a bit of sickness and exhaustion, which doesn’t make for a great holiday. In the last trimester, you probably won’t want to travel too far, as you need to be close to your hospital. The golden time is the second trimester, between 13-27 weeks, when the sickness should have subsided a little and you’ll be able to walk much easier than in the third trimester.

What do you need to pack?

No matter what gestation period you are at, it’s important to pack your maternity notes, just in case, and any medication you have been prescribed. Take some snacks that you enjoy for those times when you’re not sure what you’re craving, and comfortable flat shoes for walking around.

How can you keep yourself and your baby safe?

When you’re pregnant, you’re looking after not only yourself, but your growing baby, too. Your skin is more sensitive in pregnancy, so you’ll need to wear a higher SPF sunscreen than usual, and make sure you stay hydrated. Check the tap water is safe to drink, and if not then avoid ice cubes and salads that may have been washed in the water, as it can make you unwell. Take plenty of rests and don’t beat yourself up if you can’t be as active as you would usually be.

Where should you go?

As much as you might want to, now is not the time for a remote destination break where you’re miles away from civilisation. When choosing where to go, don’t go too far, as a long plane journey can be uncomfortable and exhausting.

As for types of holidays, something relaxing like a beach or city break is a good idea. Remember you can’t do some activities, such as skiing, roller coasters or saunas, so make sure you look at what’s available before you book.

Growing a human is not easy, so pregnancy is the perfect reason to go on a holiday. You deserve it! So what are you waiting for? Now you know these five things, there should be nothing stopping you booking a trip.
