WHAT TO DO AS A BLOGGER WHEN YOU HIT A BRICK WALL

EVER feel like your blogging efforts are going unrewarded?

Are you sick of spending heaps of time on a post and feeling that no one cares about what you’ve written?

Do you look at other bloggers, read other blogs and sometimes feel inadequate, jealous, cheesed off?!

Yes? You do?!

Brilliant.

Then it’s not just me then. *smiles*

I’ve been blogging for over three years now and in the main, I absolutely love what I do. I’ve spoken many a time about how blogging and the blogging world has enriched my life, and it has. In more ways than I’d dared imagine.

However, I’ve also experienced bouts of blogging doubt and have even occasionally dabbled with the thought of quitting. Why? Because sometimes when you’re blogging, you can feel like you’re putting in a whole lot of hard work for little – if any – return.

Every blogger hits a blogging brick wall from time to time. So if you’re currently sick of pounding on bricks and feel like you’ve come to a halt, then here are some tips to help you find your way through (over or underneath) your barriers.

——-

Stop comparing

Know your worth and stop concentrating on what everyone else is doing. Yes there will be more successful bloggers than you, yes some blogs may be ‘better’ than yours but it’s all relative my friend.

Comparing yourself to other bloggers will only leave you feeling miserable, especially if you’ve experiencing a bump in the blogging road.

So turn your focus around, stop looking outwards and start concentrating inwards, on your blog and making it the very best it can be.

Stop ‘racing’

Blogging is not a race, it’s a journey.

I say these words a lot to myself, many a time too, whenever I feel like my blog is a little stuck or ‘going nowhere’ fast.

Being a blogger is about owning and sharing your voice with the world, therefore when you think about it like that, we’re never really in competition with anyone but ourselves.

When I first started I was an eager beaver, determined to make a name for myself and get myself out there. But all I ended up doing was creating half hearted content and making myself feel like utter crap.

People can smell blogging desperation a mile off, so if you truly are desperate to succeed and are continually push, push, pushing, you’ll probably find that you get much better results if you chill out a little and go more with the flow.

Step back & have a rethink

If you’ve come to a stop in the road, then accept it and STOP. Take a break, gather your thoughts, seek inspiration and have a rethink about your blog.

Are you genuinely happy with the content? Are you in too much of a rush with your posts? Do you really need to write every single day? Are you engaging with the blogging community? Do you give back or just expect to always receive?

When a brick wall appears in front of us, often it’s an obvious sign that something is wrong or we could be doing something better. So use it to your advantage. See it as an opportunity to slow down and think.

What changes could you introduce to make you and your blog happier?

Success takes time

The majority of famous bloggers out there are not ‘overnight’ sensations, but long term grafters who have been slogging their guts out for their blogs, for years.

If you’ve just started out, it’s easy to become disheartened when you feel like you’re not achieving much or that your blog isn’t receiving the attention you hoped it would. But you need to know that being a successful blogger is a long term goal not a short term project.

In the first year of my blogging life, I gained a small but loyal readership, made a few social media ripples and earned nothing. In year two, I saw my readership increase a little and I started to work with brands for small amounts of money or occasional gifts.

And then came Year 3.

In Year 3, I felt a big positive shift. I experienced a leap in visitor numbers, I met a sensational group of blogging pals, I started to earn a lot more money, my posts began to receive recognition and strangers began to tell me that they loved my blog. Oh and I also won an award.

None of this happened overnight.

Making a name for my blog has taken me time, effort, patience and consistency.

Now after taking the leap to become a professional blogger, sure I hope to become bigger and better still, but I’m blogging at my pace, with integrity and I’m more than happy with that.

Reach out

If you’re stuck, ask for help. Reach out to fellow bloggers that you have a relationship with and ask for advice.

If you’d like to earn money from your blog, don’t just wait for brands to come to you. Take a deep breath, get in touch with some PRs and tell them what you can offer.

If you haven’t got any good PR about you and your blog, then contact a journalist and see if you can help them in any way.

If you keep getting ignored, told ‘no’ or are continually rejected, hold on to the faith and keep reaching out. As a blogger, you have to try and make things happen.

Remember why you’re doing it

When I feel rubbish about my blog, I force myself to remember why I’m doing it.

There are three reasons why I blog:

1) Because I am a writer.  That is who I am. That is what I do. And I love it.

2) Because I am passionate about helping and supporting women.

3) Because I love the opportunities that blogging brings.

When I take away all the stress and the pressure that I put on myself to make Pouting In Heels a bigger blogging name, when I strip it all back, when I find some peace, these are always the things that come to mind.

That stop me pulling the plug. That see me through darker blogging days.

So when the brick walls keep appearing and you’re wondering why you should keep bothering, have a quiet moment with yourself and listen to what your heart tells you.

Why are you blogging?

What does it offer you? What is your reason? What is your goal?

A little soul searching will do and your blog the world of good. And who knows, if you listen intently enough, you may just discover a reason that surprises you or could change everything.

With love,

Kate

“WHAT TO DO AS A BLOGGER WHEN YOU HIT A BRICK WALL”
  • Thanks for sharing fantastic advice. I’m a brand new blogger and in the chaos of trying to work out how to do it all have found its very easy to forget why I started. This advice is all so very sensible. I’m not sure I particularly plan to make money from my blog but none the less it’s always so inspiring to hear from someone who has made such s success from doing something they love.

  • I had my second bloggers block last month. I was so ready to call it quits but I didn’t. I have taken myself back to the beginning and re-assessed where I want to go and what I want to achieve. I want to be a successful blogger but as you say, it takes time. It can be hard because some bloggers who started when I did are having amazing opportunities. I am waiting for my turn x.

  • Love this, Katie. There are times I have to remind myself I started blogging because I love writing, and to raise awareness in Hugo’s memory. Traffic is important in that of course, but it is not the only indicator of success – and I didn’t even know about charts! Fab advice to stop comparing – and to get involved in the wonderful blogging community. Oh, and write for the love of writing! Xx x

  • Kate, I hate to admit it, being the confident and self-assured person I am, that I do get days where I’m like, ‘why the hell aren’t I a g’damn millionaire on the back of some of the content I write about?’ Ok, ok, so I realise that nobody really gives a monkeys about 30-something-bah-humbug-woman or crazy stories I tell the children to coax them into bed – but I can’t do anything but stay true to what I want to write about. I will always feel that I don’t fit properly into a blogging box, and this is undoubtedly a problem, because it must be difficult for PRs/marketeers to decide who on earth I’m going to appeal to.

But, it’s ok. I only started writing my blog because, like you, I love writing and have done since a teen – and this is a perfect excuse to WRITE a lot of the stuff that I consider to be absolutely fascinating (like this comment, for example). I have a fan in the Honest Mum, and my dad, so that’s good enough for me!

Thanks for writing this pep-talk, Kate – it has definitely helped in morale over here. This time next year I’ll be in year 3, and if I’m not earning a decent wage from it, I will throw my laptop out of my pram. (o; xxxx

  • Ah Kate, I so needed to read this today! I have been feeling a little down in the dumps, stretched for time to do what I want to and need to, and hamstrung by my bête noir, technology. Deep breaths, I know I can get over this just need to be kind to myself. Thankyou lovely lady xxx

  • I was going to write something very similar to what Zaz has said above. My mojo has been in the toilet this week as I’ve been up to my eyeballs in sick kids again. Didn’t make it to work, have done minimal blogging and hardly any book promotion. I keep telling myself it’s a marathon not a sprint, but it can be easy to lose perspective. Thanks for a fab and uplifting post hon xxx

  • This is great and just what I needed to read at the moment. I’m definitely having a bit of a blogging identity crisis at the moment and I feel really uninspired. I used to blog about books and I decided I didn’t like being restricted by that so I moved to self-hosted WordPress, changed my blog name and decided to start over as more of a lifestyle/parenting blog. This obviously meant losing all the traffic and connections I’d built up in the book blogging community and I kind of feel like I’m back at square one. I don’t really have a niche, I just write about whatever I feel like, so I don’t really know which community I belong in anymore. Blerghhh. I guess I’ll just keep doing what I’m doing and see where it takes me :)

Thank you for writing this post!

  • Oh wonderful list, I may only have been doing this 8 weeks and at times feel like I am being a little over zealous I just need to heed your words and remember its all about being interested in what I write for me and passionate. And then I should keep it up!!xx

  • Really great post. We’re only at the start of our journey (6 month anniversary coming up) but can still relate to much of this. Great tips and well written – thanks for sharing xo

  • This post is so helpful, I only started a few weeks ago and started to stress that I wasn’t growing quick enough but your right its not a race! #TheList

  • Lovely post… I’m currently in the ‘take a step back and chill out’ phase after a year of blogging – I felt like a was racing and it wasn’t enjoyable at that point so I’m taking a few weeks out for ‘major’ blogging and just doing a few bits to tick over! #SundayStars

    • Sometimes we all need to do this! Blogging is hard work so it’s so important we enjoy it! x

  • Ah what a good post. I’ve only just got started, in the process of getting my blog designed and getting some readers. I really enjoy it but this post has made me think about keeping everything in perspective. Thanks! xx #sundaystars x

  • Sweetness such wise words from you again! After over 4 years blogging, and even though now its my business as well as one of my passions, I still have self doubt! I like to think it’s my mind’s way of getting to step back and takr a long hard look at what I’m doing – am I pushing myself too far? Or not far enough?? Refocusing is never a bad thing even if you just return just as you were buy with a fresh set of eyes and a renewed vigour. Your tips are perfect Katie, thank you x

  • Really fab post. Especially the advice about it taking time. I know so many people who want success fast…and yet it takes so much time to build up loyalty. I’m only on year one and I can’t believe how much has come my way already, but I’m realistic in that you need to work hard and enjoy it in order to make anything from it. Love your advice and tips posts. Another brilliant one. Jess x #sundaystars

    • Thank you Jess. Love this comment because you’re absolutely right! Some people really underestimate how much time, effort and dedication is needed to make a blog successful. Delighted to hear that you’re doing so well already though. Long may it continue! xxx

    • Wooooooooo! Thank you so much. Thrilled you loved it. And yes, people always want success NOW, especially in the blogging world, but the truth of it is, is that it takes a hell of a lot of time and dedication! x

  • Love this post, I am only just a year in and have had some amazing opportunities, its all been so exciting but i feel I need to push myself all the time. Mainly because I am loving blogging and the journey. I have met some wonderful friends this year , in fact I can’t quite believe how lucky I have been meeting all these lovely people. Its a wonderful community x

    • Ah that’s wonderful to hear Sarah! And you’re right, it really is a super community to be a part of! Enjoy the crazy blogging ride. x

  • I definitely hit a blogging ‘brick wall’ a couple of weeks ago – I was exhausted and not enjoying it anymore. I took a massive step back and reassessed what it was I wanted from blogging. Right now, I just want to stick to it being a hobby – I’ve blogged a lot less this month but I’ve thoroughly enjoyed putting together every post I’ve written.

    #SundayStars

    Jenna at Tinyfootsteps xx

    • That’s good to hear Jenna! It happens to everyone and has certainly happened to me before. It’s SO important to enjoy it otherwise, well what’s the point! Keep at it! :) x

  • An amazing post, Katie, and perfect timing as I’ve been feeling the same. Happily, with the help of some lovely buddies (yourself included) I’ve come out the other side much more cheerful! The other thing that’s helped is lots more exercise and a better diet, oh and more sleep – helps with all general motivation I guess ;)

Anyway, really great post, I’m going to bookmark for next time…there’s always a next time ;) xxx

    • Haha! Yep you got it darling! Always a next time, always! And you’re right, sleep helps EVERYTHING, especially the blogging mojo xxx

  • Wow your so right, that dam blogging brick wall pops up all over the place and its hard to break down sometimes. I too am glad its not just me. I will take your tips on board thank you for this post x

    • It is but we’ve just got to keep chipping away or look for a way over. It happens to EVERYONE x

  • Oh love this and love your blog.

I am coming up to three years on my blog and something think it should be bigger and better but then I remember it is my space and my voice and this made me think this again.

Popping over from All About You linky x

    • Ah thank you Natalie! So kind of you. I think we all need to remember that probably EVERY blogger in the world (Even the giants!) think there blog should be bigger and better :) But you know, as I said in the post, it’s not a race. We just gotta do our best and put some blogging lurve out into the world. x

  • I love this post I agree with everything you’ve said, I’m not even yet a year in and sometimes it all gets too much but then i remember why I started, I’ve had some great opportunities since i started but I would still do it without that it can be hard not to compare to others and want to spend all my time making my blog better but I’m a SAHM of three theres no chance of that! I really don’t know how some do it theres not enough hours in the day! thanks for linking up with Sunday stars x

    • Ah there is NEVER enough hours in the day Amy for blogging! Never! But you know, we can only do what we can do. Sometimes I think we look at others and feel like we need to keep up, but really when we take a step back, the only thing we need to worry about is making our blogs are brilliant as possible. And yours is a beauty so you’re definitely already there. Good luck. Keep battling! xxx

  • What a fab post and there is so much food for thought. I have been thinking about what I want to achieve from my blog and while I want it to be successful and I would love to make it as a pro-blogger, I also want to remain true to myself and continue to enjoy writing. Thank you for sharing this :)
