SPONSORED POST: THE FUTURE OF OUR KITCHENS WITH IKEA

2

THE other night I was cooking tea with Elsie, teaching her to make lasagne.

It was an ordinary moment in our ordinary lives, but yet for a moment or two, I could have almost closed my eyes and gone back in time.

To one of the moments when I was cooking with my mum, as a little girl, back in our (then) state of the art eighties kitchen.

Some things like a mother teaching her daughter to cook never change, but what about our kitchens?

Can you imagine what your kitchen will look like in the future? In five, 10 or 20 years.

And how do you think we will eat as families?

Will sitting around the table be a thing of the past as we become busier and careers blur our work / life balances?

Because whilst we may not change, the way we use a kitchen, the way we prepare food and the way we eat, certainly will.

Ikea know this. And clever people that they are, they’re already working on our future kitchens, trying to figure out how we live and operate in and around them.

They’ve set up #IKEAtemporary at the World Expo in Milan to explore our future needs.

And are even looking at how advancements in technology could remove some of the barriers that keep us from enjoying everyday cooking – with things like self-refrigerating containers and my personal favourite – a worktop that even gives you recipe suggestions based on the food you put on top of it. (Can you imagine?! How amazing would that be?!)

“We believe it’s much better when you tell us how you want to live – and not the other way around. You could say that IKEA has the ingredients – but you have the recipes.” – Marcus Engman, Design manager, IKEA of Sweden.

For the next six months, Ikea will be looking at everything we do and everything we need in our kitchens, exploring our needs and desires. Holding events, workshops, talks and cook alongs all related to our lives in and around the kitchen.

Fascinating huh?

If you’re planning on visiting the World Expo in Milan do pop by and get involved! And if you like me you’re sadly not, there’s no need to worry.

You can join in all the action from the comfort of your sofa, by getting involved on social media @IKEAtemporary or visiting the special website ikeatemporary.com.

I’m off to have a good ol’ nosey around and check out the future super hob.

Because after all, a home isn’t a home if the kitchen isn’t the beating heart of it.

  • Pretty fascinating indeed. I’ve never reflected on the items we have in our kitchen now, that have become completely indispensable, and that we didn’t have back in the (insert applicable decade here).

I find it pretty thrilling when I consider the inevitable changes that our kitchens will see in the coming years.

There was a point in time where I wanted to shun technology, progress, because it isn’t like ‘the good old days’. But progress is the way forward, whether we like it or not, and so it is important to embrace it – especially when it is essentially going to be beneficial to us!

    Exciting times, Katie.
