ALL ABOUT YOU – SEEING THE TRUTH

THIS time of year makes me incredibly reflective.

Over the last few days I’ve been thinking a lot about this year, what’s happened – the good and not so good – as I’ve tried to figure out the major lessons I’ve learnt this year.

2014 has been a mixed bag if I’m honest (and yes, I know the year isn’t over yet!). There have been many blessings and some very happy memories but it has also been a huge wake up call.

Because this year, in a major way, I’ve been hit time and time again by the lesson, ‘seeing the truth‘.

As a generally happy go lucky person, one of my greatest traits is that I look for the good in the people. However whilst this is one of my best traits, it’s also my downfall because I have a tendency to ignore glaring warning signs and red flags to my own detriment.

In both people and situations, I always look for the positive, which is admirable I guess but can also leave me very vulnerable.

Seeing the truth about others and about situations should I suppose be the easiest thing in the world, yet for me, it is probably the hardest. Even though I know actions speak louder than words, I still ignore things which are hurtful and choose to see things and people through rose tinted glasses.

Now, however, thanks to this year’s shenanigans, I’ve realised it’s time for those glasses to come of!

It’s good to give folk ‘the benefit of the doubt’,  it’s good to give people a chance and I’m certainly not going to stop seeing the good in situations. But I am really trying to see things as they are ACTUALLY are now, to view people as who they TRULY are and I’m doing my best to stop choosing to see what I want or hope to see.

Basically, I guess we have to love and accept people and situations warts an’ all for who and what they are. (And that includes ourselves too!)

As the magnificent Maya Angelou puts it so beautifully above: “We are only as blind as we want to be.” Indeed!

  • Touching post, couldn’t agree more. I believe in giving people chances and forgiving (we’re all human and I for one make mistakes with the best of them) but like you, I sometimes forgive too too easily. Since kids I’ve gotten tougher though as time is so short and they really help you focus on what matters. Now when someone goes too far or shows their true colours, they’re out to me!

It means more room and energy for all the wonderful people already in my life and space for new ones to come along-aw you are one gorgeous girl inside and out Kate, keep believing in the good in people like you said just cut the ‘Negs’ out as I call them. I’m privileged to have you and the girls in my life, real friends, love ya xx

    • Wise words sweetpea. Wise words. Thanks for sharing them and you’re absolutely right! Love you (and the gals) too x

  • Great post and I couldn’t agree more! It’s important to reflect so we can learn. I wrote about friendships last week, had a similar take on it to you expect you are more forgiving than me. I will take and take so much until I can’t anymore. Only so much forgiving I can do. I have now linked up thanks to Honest Mum for sharing your post and you co-hosting a FABULOUS linky #AllAboutYou. :) xx

    • Ooooh that sounds like a good ‘un Kat! Will pop over and have a good read. Thanks ever so much for linking up x

  • Sorry to hear that people have let you down this year hon. Sometimes it’s a good thing though as getting rid of the time wasters leaves more time for the good eggs. Hugs xxx

    • It does indeed. I think it’s more of a case that I’ve chosen to see people favourably when in fact they haven’t deserved it. More my fault than theirs in many cases! x

  • This post makes me sad to think that people abuse your lovely, kind, forgiving, generous and downright fabulous personality. You only deserve the absolute best people in your life my lovely, don’t you forget it! Xx mwah xX

    • Ah thank you beautiful. Don’t you worry I’m absolutely fine. Better than fine in fact. It’s been a great lesson to learn this year x

  • I’m like that, always try to see the good in people and as you say it is to my own detriment! I think I’ll take a leaf out of your book and try to see things and situations (even people) as they truly are! I don’t know about you but I have a hard time empathising with people’s negative traits, e.g. If someone has lied or done something worse I find it really hard to understand why they’ve done it or even ‘see’ that they’ve done tu because I wouldn’t behave that way myself? Hope that makes sense! Thanks for hosting #AllAboutYou xx

    • Makes total sense Georgina! I think that’s why we don’t ‘see’ the truth because we can’t quite believe people would behave like that. I also think it’s important to focus on people’s actions not just words (which is weird coming for a word lover!). People can tell us anything but it’s their actions that really count. x

  • Great post. You do learn the hard way about people unfortunately – worse when you’re a kind person and want to give people the benefit of the doubt! There are ‘toxic’ people though, those who suck the joy out and make things hard work. Life is too short! #AllAbout You xxx
