NINE MYTHS ABOUT BLOGGING THAT NEED TO BE OBLITERATED

IT’S changed my life, my beautiful little corner of the Internet.

But it’s also brought some very interesting conversations my way and a hell of a lot of questions too.

There’s a whole glut load of misconceptions when it comes to blogging and being a blogger. About the work that’s involved, about what it’s really like and of course, how much money you can make from it.

In the three or so years I’ve been at it (blogging that is), I’ve heard all sorts, much of which – if I’m honest – has been the stuff of nonsense.

Want to know what blogging is really like? Then pay attention.

Here are nine blogging myths that I’m going to obliterate. (Altogether now – ooooo!) Here is the truth, or my blogging truth at least.

1) Blogging is easy

Ooooh if I had a pound for every time I’ve been told this little gem. Be prepared to have your bubble burst now, because let me tell you non-blogging folk, it is the opposite to easy.

It is hard. It is challenging. It is often fraught with more problems than you can ever imagine.

Wonderful it most certainly is. However, easy it most definitely is NOT.

2) Blogging success happens overnight

Oh if only this was true! Overnight success as a blogger takes years to achieve. Yep you heard me. Years.

It may appear that a blogger suddenly appears in the media or on the ‘scene’ overnight, but I’ll let you into a little secret. That blogger who’s just magically appeared and is everywhere all of a sudden, has been grafting their little bottom off for years.

Working, dreaming, working, dreaming. 24/7. Non stop.

3) Blogging is all about free stuff

Wrong. Yes, you can receive lots of gifts (if you want to), however let me tell you none of them are actually free. Not really.

Because you see all the free stuff you receive needs writing about. It needs photographing. It needs sharing. And all of this takes lots and lots of time.

It is wonderful to receive gifts, really wonderful but it is not for free. Not really.

4) Most bloggers are just in it for the free stuff

Some are granted but the majority are not.

The majority want to share their lives with you. They want to make you howl with laughter or weep, from the very beauty of their words. They want to build you up, inspire you and make the online world a better place.

Personally, I haven’t met one blogger yet who is just in for the (not so) free stuff.

5) The blogging world is a horrid competitive place

Competitive? Yes. Horrid. No.

Perhaps I’ve been the luckiest blogger alive, but I have to tell you – in the main – the blogging world has been nothing but supportive, encouraging and inspirational for me.

So why competitive? Because every blogger I know is competitive with themselves, working hard on their blog, to try and make their online space the very best it can be.

6) Blogging is so glamorous!

Hmmm. Where do I begin. Ok, so sometimes yes, it can be. Sometimes you do get to go to fabulous parties, sometimes you do get to wear fabulous gowns (more on that soon!) and sometimes you do get to have a whale of a good time!

However…in the main it’s anything but. (Unless your definition of glamour is sitting in your scruffs or PJs at all hours, frantically typing and emailing and commenting and editing images and sorting out tech issues!)

Because this is what it’s like.

This is what you don’t see, when you come across a beautiful post from the most wonderful style blogger or you swoon over a holiday trip that your favourite blogger has been on.

This is the reality.

7) Bloggers aren’t respected

Totally wrong. Some people have a bit of snobbery towards bloggers. Some brands even do too (although these are now thankfully in the minority these days!)

But don’t be mistaken. Us bloggers? We are a respected bunch. And are becoming even more so.

Most of the best writers and minds in the world, blog. The most incredible, imaginative and creative people you can ever think of, blog. Some of the best content you will ever read online, will be found on someone’s blog.

Sure there are some blogs out there which aren’t so great, but really, as a whole, the wealth of talent in the bloggersphere is nothing short of phenomenal.

7) Blogs are pointless

Really? How so?

Do you think people sharing their stories to inspire you is a pointless thing to do? Do you think seeing breathtaking imagery on screen makes you appreciate the beauty of the world, less? Do you think sharing experience and information is wasted?

Because this is what bloggers do. This is what blogs bring to the world.

Beauty, creativity, ideas, soulful stories, experience, humour and emotion. No doubt about it, to me, the world is a much better place for them. (God bless you fellow bloggers!)

8) Blogging will make me rich!

Ok, so it might. And hopefully -if that’s your goal – then it will!

However most blogs don’t earn enough money for the blogger to retire, put their feet up and jet off to live in the Maldives for the rest of their days.

Blogging probably won’t make you rich but. And it’s a big BUT.

It can and will bring you riches, if you work hard and you’re passionate about it.

It can earn you decent money, it can bring incredible opportunities your way, it can introduce you to amazing new friends and it can bring out skills and talent in you, that you didn’t even know you possess.  Not too bad ey?

9) Bloggers live perfect lives

We don’t. Or certainly I don’t. Dammmm. ;-)

We work hard, like really hard. And we’re never off ‘shift’.

We’re perfectionists, always wanting to hone our craft and impress you our readers. (Trust me, we really, REALLY care about you guys! You have no idea!)

We’re never completely satisfied with our blogs and there is never, ever, enough time in the day to do everything that we need to do.

But we are fortunate. And we do live amazing, fulfilling creative lives, that’s for sure.

We spend our days working on our passions. We get to communicate our very thoughts and opinions to you. We get to experience opportunities that we didn’t dare dream about.

And if we’re really lucky, we get to move you and stir your soul, which is the best feeling ever.

Like the sound of it? Then what are you waiting for? Give it a go!

(Just don’t expect it to be easy or for you to be jetting off to the Maldives anytime soon. Although if you do manage it and you need a plus one, you know where I am. *winks*)

Fellow bloggers and blogger pals? What do you think? Have I got this right? Are there any that I’ve missed off the myth list? Would love to hear your thoughts on this one.

With love,

Kate

  • Another amazing post, Katie! All your points are bang on. Blogging is blinking hard work, not glamorous (that I’ve found so far, anyway!) and so very important. It is no exaggeration to say that we have so much to offer. I’m aware it can be very competitive, but I’ve had nothing but support and loveliness from people. I think you get out what you put in, like with so many things xxx

    • You sure do Leigh, you sure do. It is by far the hardest thing I have ever worked at but I couldn’t imagine my life without it now! Could you?! Thanks for your kind words darling xx

  • Aw love this hun, was nodding along in agreement. Blogging absolutely rocks, can earn you an amazing living and most importantly, feed your creativity and bring you the best of friendships like you and the gals! Mwah x

  • And it’s posts like this that make you a fabulous shortlist for the BiBs! Congratulations on that by the way!
YES to all nine of these, I think there are many people with misconceptions on what blogging is really like so thanks for debunking the myths xx

  • Well said, as always. I think there is definitely still some snobbery about blogging but I wonder if some of that is because people (journalists, mainly) feel threatened by it? A great post to debunk the myths anyway.

    • Yes I think you’re right Tara, there is an element of this, however as a fellow journalist, I don’t understand it and urge them to join the club! ;-)

  • Fab post and I agree with all the points. I have had nothing from support from other bloggers. I also didn’t realise just how much work goes into blogging until after I started and it’s only a hobby for me!
    Becky xx

    • Exactly! I don’t think you can until you’re actually doing it!So much more to it than meets the eye! So pleased to hear you’ve found nothing but lovely bloggers x

  • Great post, I agree with every point especially the one about overnight success. Like everything else, blogging takes hard work and dedication :)

    • It really does, doesn’t it Kat?! And you’re a wonderful prime example of how both of those things can transform your life. (You know your blog is truly wonderful right?!) x

  • Hi Katie,

I’m a newbie blogger and some days I think why do people want to read all about me?? But like you have so brilliantly put its about sharing our experiences, encouraging others, making friends and enjoying it at the same time.

One misconception that I have heard and totally don’t agree with is that the blogging community is a horrid place. I have connected with so many fabulous lovely people in such a short space of time and I’ve loved every minute of it.

So thank you beautiful blogging community you rock

And of course a big Thank you Katie for such interesting and motivating posts ❤️

    • Ah Mel, I’m so glad that you too have found the blogging community to be supportive and lovely! (Because it really is, mostly) Don’t ever underestimate the power of your blog, your voice or where it can take you. :)

We ALL have something unique to offer, no matter how new or old we are to it. Well done on taking the leap and thank you x

  • Yes, agree with all of these. And honestly, if I had a penny for all of the times people have said, “oh wow, you get all of that free stuff”. Yes, I got ‘free stuff ‘, but I had to create a stonking bit of copy to earn it, not to mention spending time writing to companies beforehand to actually work with them in the first instance. Because, you know, for unknown bloggers, offers for work don’t tend to be flying in from nowhere! Virtual schmoozing, anyone?

As well as being able to creatively string a grammatically correct sentence together, you need to also learn the art of sales (selling yourself), marketing and PR if you’re going to get anyone to read your blog, not to mention anyone to work with you.

And learning the art of coding (I haven’t, by the way, although I’ve dabbled) as well as various other techie stuff…

Bloggers basically have some mad skills! Proud to be part of the crew and always striving to be better. Xx

    • Yes Fiona, YYYESSSS! You’re so right, so much to learn, I forgot to mention how much actual work is involved that isn’t actually blogging such as PR, tech stuff, marketing etc. You’re damn right (naturally) about the mad skillz too. I know i’m biased, but I have to say, I think we’re a pretty awesome bunch! Proud of you and your effort x

  • Spot on Kate, blogging is not easy, but then neither is anything that’s worth doing in life.

In my limited personal experience my friends still find it slightly perplexing why I/other people blog for pleasure, but thankfully find it intriguing enough to enjoy and are now dipping into other people’s blogs too. So it’s nice to think I’ve introduced a whole new corner of the Internet to them!

I’m also using my blog to help my daughter learn to blog/vlog/write/edit so she’s learning that the success of all her YouTube heroes has not come easy.

Thank you for the great read

    • My pleasure Donna, thanks so much for your comment and popping by. I often forget how confusing us bloggers can be to non-blogging people, in fact today I’ve been trying to explain to my Mum what it is, this “online stuff” that I do ;-)

Truly delighted to hear that you’ve introduced pals to the wonderful bloggersphere and that you’re using your own blog to help your daughter! Amazing! Really hope I’ll be able to do similar with my daughter Elsie when she’s older. x

  • Another fab post Kate! I agree with you completely. As a woman who has been blogging for a few years and still hasn’t ‘made it big’ I can definitely say that if you blog it should be because you love it. Love to write, love what you are writing about and above all want to work hard at it. Thanks again for another great read! :-)

    • Yes Lauryn! That’s something I forgot to mention actually so thank you for bringing that up, the importance that blogging is a passion. The importance that you love it. The importance that you live, sleep and breathe it, not because you have to, but because you want to. Well done on the blogging lady and keep at it! x

  • Lovely, on point post! Being a writer for women’s mags as well as a blogger, I find I enjoy them equally. But with my blog, I do find I have that little bit more freedom to actually write as ‘me’ rather than adjusting my tone to the magazine’s voice. I’m crap at the tech stuff and images I’m not so hot on…but I’m learning and as you all say, the blogging community are a fab bunch of women (and guys!). Lisa x @ukglowology

    • Gosh it really is Lisa isn’t it?! Blogging is tough – as you say so much involved (I’m not the best at the tech stuff either) – but the beauty of it, the real beauty in my humble opinion is that we get to share our voices with the world. I honestly don’t think in our field of work, you can ask for better than that x

  • Definitely agree with these. I hate hearing about ‘all the free stuff’ I get. It certainly takes enough time and effort and I wouldn’t not describe it as free. So annoying! #brilliantblogposts

  • I love this!

Yes blogging gives you a voice but as with most things in life it doesn’t give you a free lunch!

I feel lucky to have a place a call home with my blog and to know some great people but for anyone to read your blog or send you items to review, you have to work to ensure it is worth it for everyone.

Glad to have found your blog.
    Nat x

    • Thanks Nat! Oooh, I love your comment about how it doesn’t give you a free lunch, because it really doesn’t! So glad you’ve found an online home too, blogging really is wonderful, but as you rightly say, for anyone to get anything out of it (readers too!) it takes such hard work! x

    • Thanks Luisa! That’s wonderful, I’m sat here with my cup of tea going ‘yes!’ :) Thank you very much for you kind words and good luck. It’s just such an honour to be shortlisted. x

  • Such a great list of myths!! Before I started blogging, I too thought it would be a piece of cake… But it definetely needs A LOT of hard work and dedication!

    • It’s funny how quick the bubble is burst isn’t it?! I too, thought the same. Oh how little we knew! :)

  • What a great post! Blogging certainly isn’t easy but it is so much fun and totally addictive.

    #Thelist

  • Thanks for writing this. It has been reassuring as a new blogger. I am both surprised by how much work is involved and also how much I love it!! #TheList

    • Yes it’s quite a shock isn’t it Kirsten?! :) Great to hear that you are also loving it too as that really is the most important thing! x

  • Oh I love this post so much – I need to share this with EVERYONE to help them understand. Thank you and have a great weekend #TheList

  • A great summary, Katie. I would also add, as a partial myth, that content is everything. Content is certainly king – a decent level of content is a non-negotiable for successful blogging – but it also requires hard work in terms of publicising yourself, interaction and generally putting yourself out there if you want to make an impact. Sure, there’s the odd blog which is fortunate enough to go viral or just be so stunningly original that it takes off all on its own. But for the other 99.99%, you get out what you put in – that can be hard work, but it doesn’t have to be *hard* *work* either if you’re loving what you do (or should that be doing what yoy love?)

    • Yes, yes, YES Tim! Absolutely spot on! (I wouldn’t expect anything less from you.)

In a way your comment demands a whole blog post of its own, but in a nutshell I couldn’t agree with you more. I’d always heard when I first started that concentrating on content and producing great quality content was the key to success (not to mention longevity), which of course it is. However, without marketing, PR, putting yourself out there and networking, your great content is just lost in an online sea of millions of blogs. A lone soldier in a tough overwhelming battle. Such a great reminder and brilliant advice. *makes a note*

  • Great post. I totally agree with them all! One I hear a lot is “bloggers aren’t real writers” to me a real writer is someone who’s real and writes! Clearly to some people if you’re not on the Times Bestsellers list, you’re not a writer! I tend to respond to this with “only real readers get it” that usually stumps them lol #TheList
    Debbie
    http://www.myrandommusings.blogspot.com

    • Ooooh Debbie, you’re a wise woman! And I hope you don’t mind but I’m so pinching that line! ;-) x

  • This list covers it all, had to smile at the glamorous one as I’m sat here blogging with one leg up on a cushion with a pack of frozen peas on my knee to bring the swelling down! Glamorous it definitely isn’t!! Thanks for sharing on Sunday Stars

    • Haha! We know the truth don’t we Amanda?! ;-) (Although I bet the frozen peas have never looked better!) x

  • Fab post as usual! I only blog as a hobby at the moment, whether that will ever change, we will see but it is a sideline to my full time job – it is something for me to enjoy, a little piece of my own. BUT – it is bloody hard work!! I have too been incredibly lucky and everyone I have come across so far has welcomed me with open arms :) #sundaystars

    • It really is Lisa! It’s tough and challenging but also incredible. So thrilled to hear you’ve been lucky too! x

  • I’m nodding along with all these points. My blog takes up most (if not all) of my free time. If I’m not writing, I’m reading, commenting or spending hours on social media BUT I do love every second of it.

Such a great idea for a post! You clever thing.

Congratulations again on making the BiBs shortlist, you have my vote xxxx

    • Thanks lovely. Me too, there’s much more to blogging than meets the eye isn’t there?! xx

  • A fab post lovely. I’ve received quite a few items for review recently & someone commented that they needed to get into blogging to get all this free stuff. They just didn’t get it when I tried to explain that it isn’t free and there’s lot of work that goes into blogging to enable you to even start getting ‘free stuff’ then all the work that goes into writing & reviewing the ‘free stuff’ xx #TheList

    • Thanks Toni. Oh if only it was that simple ey? I know of people who have started blogs to get free stuff and then quite after realising how hard it is, as you say, to even earn it in the first place! x

  • Great post. There seem to be a lot of misconceptions about blogging which I have only recently come across. I think a lot of people don’t quite understand what it is! I sometimes get a blank face when I mention my blog #SundaysStars.

    • Thanks Rachel! Totally agree, lots of people don’t quite ‘get’ what a blog is or why they are so amazing! x

  • A fabulous post. I totally relate to all these points. Especially number one. Blogging is bloody hard but many non-bloggers don’t get that. They think you can just sit down at a computer and half an hour late you’ve published a blog post. Oh, I wish their were true. I spend hours crafting and honing every post I write. Plus then there is all the added extras that accompany blogging. But I do love it and wouldn’t change it for the world. Thanks for linking up with #SundaysStars. Hugs Mrs H xxxx

    • Ah you’re a wonderful blogger Mrs H! I’m so chuffed you love it, because I want you to stick around for a long time! But yes, as we’re all saying, no doubt about it, it’s hard work! xxx

  • A brilliant post. I’m relatively new to blogging and have loved it so far. I’ve made some lovely friends, had some wonderful opportunities and really enjoyed my little creative outlet but at times it can become overwhelming when I take too much on. Nearly all my free time when the kids nap in the day and night is spent editing, writing, researching etc but I do it because I love it. I regularly worry that the blog is boring/rubbish/ uninteresting/pointless etc etc but if nothing else it’s a great place to witter ;)

    • Hi Steph, you must never think like that about your blog! Never! It’s YOUR online space, you can do anything with it. Sometimes things work and sometimes they don’t but that’s ok. It can take a good while to find your feet as a blogger. So pleased to hear you are loving it and have made lovely friends, and don’t forget every blogger, no matter how ‘successful’ finds it overwhelming at times. Thanks for popping by! x

    • It surely does! And no one works harder than YOU my darling. Can’t wait to meet you at BritMums! x

  • How insightful. I’m a new blogger and really appreciate your comments because I’m grafting and expect to do so for a while yet before anyone takes notice of my blog. Really I do it to challenge myself and it’s nice to know there is a rewarding side to it beyond just my efforts in developing my blog.

    • Ah my pleasure Fola! You’re doing it for exactly the right reasons. When I started this blog i didn’t do it in the hope I would get anything from it or make any money from it, but just because I wanted to write more personal stuff. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, I’d write on this blog even if I was the only reader! ;-)

  • Dammit and there was me thinking I’d be a blogging sensation and millionaire overnight.

Looks like I’ve lots more years of late night post writing, tweeting whilst on the free wi fi in tescos and making my poor kids pose for hundreds more photos.

    • Haha! I’m afraid so Alan but hey you never know you may just be the exception to the rule ;-)

  • Brilliantly put! I think people just don’t get how long it takes – I’ve been going 7 years and am now finding the slow but steady approach to be working. There’s always someone who wil say’pah! Blogger’ but what do they know? And yay to such a supportive group of bloggers! X

    • I’m with you there Helen! Congratulations on seven years too! Incredible! *high fives* x

  • Well said! There are SO many misconceptions about blogging, people still don’t know what it is. I love blogging but it’s important to point out that it is hard work and a proper job (to some). People still don’t get that. And also, people tend to pity you when you say you’re a pro blogger, like you can’t get a “real” job.

    Great post, thanks Katie. x

Life & Love by Victoria Lagnehag

    • Thanks Victoria! No people just don’t get it, do they? And I guess, how can they? It’s only when you start up a blog, that you go ‘aaahhhhh, now I see!’ ;-) Never had anyone pity me for being a blogger, yet. If anything it’s always been the opposite so that’s interesting to hear! x

  • This is great and the next time someone asks me why I don’t have a go at getting a proper job I shall direct them over here! Actually the points become even more apparent the longer I have been doing this, the tremendous amount of hard slog being most notable.

Ps love the pics you have a naughty cheeky twinkle in your eye you little minx ;-) xxx

    • Haha! Yes do! Most people have no idea how much hard work it is or how much effort it requires just to keep a blog going! Thanks for your comment about the pics too – I always have a naughty twinkle in my eye Amy, it’s what gets me into mischief! ;-) x

  • Ha! Great post darling – I was nodding throughout! Especially the glamorous and the (not so) free stuff. Spot on! Thanks for linking up to #TheList xxx

  • Super stuff and so true, we are never off shift. Even when taking a break I still have a bloggers mindset and have to sit on my hands not to snap pictures or I start composing posts in my head and emailing myself ideas! Mich x

    • Oh goodness Michelle, we are so alike! It’s amazing how the blogging buzz gets you – so inspiring but as you say, we have to try and enjoy our lives too! Thanks for your lovely comment. x
