HOW I IMPROVED MY SKIN (IN JUST TWO MONTHS)

BEAUTY may be more than skin deep but let’s face it we all look and feel better when our skin is looking its best.

Besides the dreadful spotty teenage years, I’ve always been pretty happy with my skin. It’s generally been fine and has served me well.

But motherhood and sleep deprivation have definitely taken their toll recently and as the years on my clock start to increase, I thought it was about time to get to grips with my skin and show it a little more TLC.

Tiredness and general busyness meant that a proper skincare routine had fallen waaay down the bottom of my list and most nights I was finding myself curling up in bed without even giving a thought to taking my make up off, utterly grim I know.

Something had to change.

So I started this year on a bit of a skincare mission and kicked it off by reading the brilliant Pretty Honest book by Sali Hughes. (This book is so wonderful, I urge you to buy it for yourself and every woman you know).

I took various tips from Sali and combined them with a few pearls from other places and introduced some changes.

And in just two months, my skin has definitely improved, so much so that it has even started to receive compliments. Not bad ey?

I’m well aware that making positive changes to your skin takes time (around 4 weeks I think before you even start to see an improvement) but finally I feel like I’m on the right track and showing my adult skin the attention it deserves

If your skin is looking more sad than rad at the moment you may like to give some of these things a try. Here is what has worked for me.

ImprovedSkin

Never go to bed with your make up on

I’m starting with the obvious deadly skin sin because I totally get it, that when you’re a knackered mum, the last thing you want to do at the end of an exhausting day, is clean your face and take your make up off. I get it.

But it ruins your skin. It really does. It definitely made mine look pretty iffy.

If you’re too tired at the end of the day to remove it or even think about removing it however, just do this…take it off EARLIER, like when you get home from work or after you’ve had your tea. This top tip that I’ve pinched straight from Sali is obvious but genius.

I now take my make up off and pamper my skin every night, as soon as Elsie is tucked up in bed. And what do you know? My skin looks a million times better.

Cleanse your face with a decent cleanser & flannel

Yep flannel? Remember those? Another top tip from Sali (I told you she’s amazing) and one that works a treat.

Invest in a good cleanser, preferably something creamy or like a balm (my current favourite is Balance Me Cleanse and Smooth Face Balm which I absolutely swear by) massage it in all over your face then remove with a warm wrung out flannel.

It removes make up brilliantly and cleans your face so well, leaving your face looking brighter and healthier.

Ditch the muslin cloths (they’re too aggressive for skin apparently) and hop foot it to Wilko’s where you can pick up super lovely white flannels for about 30p! Do what I’ve done and buy in bulk so you can use a fresh one every day as the other goes in the wash.

Invest in a serum

I’m one of those women who always believed that moisturiser was the pot of skin care magic I needed to invest my money in but according to the experts (I’m talking Sali Hughes and Caroline Hiron for starters ) this is NOT the case.

Moisturiser should be used to add comfort and protection but it does not solve or tackle skin problems. (Who knew?!) Nope, that my friends is where serums come in.

Serums are the magic potions which address skin problems like redness, dehydration, fine lines and dullness and this is where we should be spending our money, not on fancy moisturisers.

I’ve been using Lancome Advanced Genifique for the past two months and it has worked wonders. My skin is softer, brighter, more even in tone and the fine lines around my mouth are less pronounced.

It’s not cheap and is definitely a luxury product but the results speak for itself.  I’m hooked.

Drink more water

I’m not a fan of the clear stuff from the tap but I am a fan of herbal teas so this is where I get my water intake.

I also make sure to start each day with a cup of hot water and lemon and I swear this has made a difference in helping my skin look clearer.

Wear less foundation (or none at all!)

I’d gotten into the habit of wearing foundation all over my face, every day, which was fine. But sometimes – especially if my skin was playing up- it could look a bit ‘mask like’ towards the end of the day. You know what I mean ladies.

And then I read ‘How To Be Parisian’ and was inspired. Like totally inspired. Did you know that in Paris, women wear hardly any foundation and prefer to go bare faced? And that on a first date, the tendency is to turn up wearing very little make up or none at all?!

“Skin should look natural. Freckles can appear in spring along with the first rays of sunshine. Sometimes your cheekbones blush when you lie and your whole face flushes when you are animated.

You must not stifle the stories behind the natural colouring of your skin.”

When I read this, I cheered inside.

And so, inspired by the oh so chic Parisians, I now hardly wear any foundation in the day. Just a little on my T-zone area to balance things out or sometimes none at all.

And guess what? Quell surprise, the Parisian ladies are right. My skin looks much better in its more natural state of glory.

Embrace the skin you’re in

Most of us are so guilty of wanting what we do or cannot have. We want tanned skin when we are naturally pale. We want freckles when we don’t have any. We cover our freckles when we do.

But it’s time to stop desiring and start appreciating, the skin YOU ARE IN. To love it, see it and show it the respect and care it truly deserves.

Sure our skin can be troublesome at times. It plays up. It can get angry when it’s cold outside, it doesn’t do well when hormones run amok and it’s a clear indicator of when we need more sleep.

But one thing I know for sure, is that it responds really well to kindness and care.

Like most living, breathing things, all our skin wants is a little love. Surely we can oblige?

What do you think? Have you got any super duper skin care tips to share? Any tricks of the trade that work for you? Would love to hear your thoughts!

With love,

Kate

  • I really need to give mine some more love. I’m terrible for going to bed without taking my makeup off, like you said I just want to sleep. I think I’m gonna start doing what you do though and doing my skin care after Luca is in bed. Also who knew muslin cloths were a no go. They’ll be getting ditched. I’m also horrendous for not getting enough water into
    me.

You’ve inspired me to try get on top of my skin again! X

    • Hurray! I was getting so slovenly Franki cos like most mums I was just worn out at the end of the day, but actually taking my make up off earlier and giving myself 10 mins when Elsie is in bed to wash my face and pamper it a little, feels really lovely and is totally do-able. Let me know how you get on! x

  • This is a very helpful post! I used to be so much more focused on cleansing and toning and whatnot as a teenager (when I had pretty good skin luckily) but am so lazy these days. Great tip on the flannels, will be getting those, so old school but worth it apparently! Been wondering about serums, you sometimes think it’s yet another beauty industry ploy to help you part with your cash but good to know they work. And I keep reading about hot water and lemon so time to give that a whirl too. Cheers mama for the info – you have gorgeous skin anyway it seems so let’s start with great genes ;-) x

    • The flannels are definitely old school but I can’t believe the difference using them has made to my skin. Go invest! Glad you found the info useful, like you I’ve always been pretty skeptical about serums and the like but it’s definitely done great things (unlike expensive moisturisers which I’ve spent a fortune on the in the past!) x

  • Fab post as always! Completely agree with all of these points. Your skin will only look as good as what you do to it and how you care for it. With you on the minimal make-up – I like my freckles to show (and always taking the make-up off at the end of the day!), serum (I have a Body Shop one) and loads of water. I didn’t know about the flannel tip, so will give that a go and raid Wilko’s for supplies. One tip to add – I always, every day of the year, wear a moisturiser with SPF to protect my face from those nasty aging rays. xxx

    • I’ve heard really good things about the Body Shop serum Leigh and apparently Superdrug do a brilliant hydrating one for just £2.99! I’ve bough all my flannels from Wilko’s and they’re super. Can def recommend. Cheap as chips too. And yes…you’re SO right about SPF. I use a moisturiser with SPF 15 in Winter. xxx

  • I’m pleased to report that I follow all of these tips already! I’m 53 and my skin is great and often commented on, so keep on doing what you’re doing!

Incidentally, I like Neal’s Yard Beauty Balm – it smells divine.

  • Love it! I hate taking my make up off at the end of the day – you know when the water runs down your arms and makes your Pjs all soggy? I hate that!! So I tend to brush my teeth then pretend I’ve forgotten. A flannel though…this would solve all my troubles, and how decadent to have a clean one for every day of the week ;)

I’m off to add your Parisian book and Sali’s book to my reading list!

  • Great post Kate!
A beautician told me about the flannel trick 5 years ago and my once spotty skin has never been better, using a clean one each time as you say is vital then letting the skin dry naturally. At the sight of most moisturisers my skin will break out but I now use dermol cream, which is for eczema really, but a tiny bit on my face keeps it hydrated and under control! A tip for anyone with trouble skin!
Will try your other suggestions. Thanks!

  • I’m going to try this cleanser. I used Elemis for year coupled with a garier face wash. Since having my daughter my skin is horrific!
So fully of angry, red (painful) welt like spots!
    Great post x

  • I’ve been out and bought three white flannels today and used one, with a cream cleanser, to take my makeup off tonight. I also bought a moisturiser/serum combo today. Loving this post. I’ll let you know if I see a difference! x

  • Ergh! Ok…now that I’ve looked up the difference between British English and American English, flannel = washcloth

  • Great post! I’ve had a nightmare with my skin since Archie was born. I agree with all your tips, especially drinking more water! I realised that when I was pregnant I drank so much water and my skin was amazing. Sometimes it’s not a huge spot-zapping routine that helps, but just the simple things. #sundaystars

  • As a recent discoverer (is that even a word?) of Eve Lom skincare products my skin feels absolutely amazing. No little tricks, and I’m ashamed to say, more often than not, removing my makeup is done with a scrub of a baby wipe :/
Dermalogica’s Daily Microfoliant is one product I ill rave about because it’s incredible! Hats off to French ladies, not sure i’d be brave enough to show up to a date with no foundation on! That book sounds very interesting though – thanks for sharing xx

    • It’s great, well worth a buy. Have tried Dermalogica’s Microfoliant before and yes I liked it too :) x

  • I am going and getting Sali Hughes’ book right now – heard so many good things about it. Going without foundation would be my biggest hurdle. I mainly wear tinted moisturiser but it’s still feels like its protecting me! xx

    • Great news! You’ll love it!It’s a classic. I think the key to less foundation is go with what you’re comfortable with! x

  • I could use these tips as I’m feeling a bit sluggish looking at the moment! I love a cup of hot water and lemon but always forget and just go for the coffee. I love serum though, am using Origins at the moment but have always fancied trying Genefique. Thanks for linking up to #sundaystars

  • Brilliant post. I totally agree with all these points. I also love Sali Hughes and Caroline Hiron and would do anything they said. I have been drinking more water this year and starting the day off with hot water and lemon and it does really help. I fill healthier in general and my skin is much better. I think my top tip would be sunscreen. I try to wear sunscreen whenever I go outside. In winter, it will be in my moisturiser or foundation but in summer I will slather sun screen on my face every morning before I put on my make-up. It is definitely one of the best things that you can do for your skin. Hugs Mrs H xxxx #TheList

    • Yes, they’re amazing women aren’t they?! I love how they both take the nonsense out of beauty and keep it real. Love the sunscreen tip! I currently use a moisturiser with a SPF15 included but will switching to factor 30 when the weather gets warmer! x

  • As someone who only wears make up if I’m going somewhere nice (and never go anywhere nice lol) I’m very glad to read number 5! I do need to start drinking more water though. Thanks for linking up with #SundayStars

  • Weird. I’ve been planning on writing a post on skin and my first two top tips were going back to a flannel and using Balance Me Face Balm! I absolutely adore it and the smell is just amazing. I also love Sali Hughes but didn’t realise she had a book out – so that’s one tip I’ll be taking away with me -thanks! #allaboutyou

  • Eek I’m a big lover of foundation I’m afraid although I do use Bare Minerals now (after Vicki recommended it) and I have really noticed how my skin is clearer. Love these tips honey, and that really has to be my favourite pic of you at the top – just gorgeous!! xx

  • I hardly ever wear foundation, only on very special occasions, but I may have to try and change the washing cloth I use as well as getting started on serums.

Thanks for sharing the tips :)

  • I do most of these already and can say they really do work. I recently slacked on the water intake and my goodness could you tell, especially around my eyes. I wasn’t getting any less sleep or more stressed than usual. I am going to follow about the flannels, I’ve heard that a lot recently and the serums. I always assumed they were just a sneaky sales ploy and that moisturiser was the magic.

    • The flannels are amazing as is serum. I always thought the same as you, but it makes sense now. Moisturiser is just to make the skin feel more ‘comfortable’, give it a barrier from the elements etc whilst the serum does the repair work. Let me know how you get on! x

  • Following proper skin routine will help you a lot. Drink plenty of water and add fresh vegetables and fruits in your diet.

Removing makeup before bed, applying moisturizer also help to nourish your skin.
