IF THE HAT FITS (WEAR IT)

WHAT do you all think about the hat?

Do you wear them? Would you buy one? Are you a fan?

I’ve always been a bit of a closet hat lover. I’ve loved them for years, have fawned over vintage ones in shops and gasped at photos of women in bygone times, dressed up to the nines in their dainty pillerbox hats and elegant buttery leather gloves.

But besides an odd furry hat for those snow days or a stunning number for the races, I’ve always been a bit of a chicken when it comes to wearing one, just during the day, out and about.

Do you know what I mean?

I tend to think of a hat as a glamorous piece, for a special occasion such as a wedding or the like. So even though I do love them, I’ve always shied away from wearing one, on your average jo kind of day.

But years ago, wearing a hat was just the done thing wasn’t it? It’s what you did. It’s what you wore. As normal and as everyday as slipping on your coat or popping on some lippy before you left the house.

There’s really nothing silly or odd about it.

So, with that in mind, it was time for me to take the plunge.

Recently, I’ve braved my own silly hat fears and have become quite taken with this stunning black Fedora Hat from Outdoor and Country.

It’s a very smart hat I’m sure you’ll all agree, but it’s also pretty near perfect for wearing during the day too. When it’s not so wet (it’s fine for light showers) and not so windy! (hat pins anyone?!)

This is the kind of hat I’ve been admiring for years.

Classic and wearable, I also adore the zip detail which gives it a little edge and keeps it modern.

Admittedly, it has taken me a while to get used to wearing it. My husband giggled when he first saw me in it, not he assures me, because I look bonkers, but because I just don’t wear hats as the norm, very often.

Or at least I haven’t until now.

One thing I’m still getting to grips with, with the ol’ hat thing though, is what to wear with it because it’s not as easy as you might think!

But I’m fast learning that simple lines, minimal accessories and a heel work best. Or certainly for me.

Here, I’ve teamed the hat with a classic black suede pinafore dress from George, a breton striped top from Oasis (just seen), black opaque tights, George ankle boots with shimmery heel detail (comfiest high heeled boots I’ve owned!), my bargain of the century denim trench coat from Primark and a leather bag from TK Maxx.

Wearing this lovely hat still feels a little odd at times, but I do absolutely love it!

It certainly helps to keep my head nice and warm and I have to say, a hat sure knows how to finish off an outfit.

I might be mistaken, but I’m sure I can hear those ladies from decades past, cheering me on.

What do you think? Should I start investing in more hats? Are there any ‘hat rules’ I need to obey or take onboard?!

With love,

Kate
