MONEY can’t buy you love.

But that doesn’t mean we don’t all enjoy a treat every once in a while. There are certain times when a heartfelt present goes a long way.

For the wary or uninitiated (yes boyfriends and hubbies, I’m mostly talking to you!), here’s a rundown of exactly when those times are, and how to choose the perfect present that will show you care.

The thoughtful birthday gift

Whether you’ve been together six months or 16 years, everyone likes a present on their birthday.

Instead of the same old usual things, why not treat them to a night away, perhaps to somewhere they have never been before? It doesn’t have to cost the earth; Air B and B and other sites have some fantastic deals, especially if you book far enough in advance.

The perfect anniversary gift

Anniversaries are a time to celebrate the two of you, and what better way to do it than to give your other half a photo book that documents your time together.

Photo books are really easy to make online, and can be made truly unique with personalised themes and the addition of your own text. Go on – get your creative juices flowing!

The non-cheesy Valentine’s Day gift

Valentine’s Day is tricky – most girls have had enough red roses and teddy bears to last a lifetime, but gift hampers are a great alternative.

Ready-made hampers for her are becoming more and more popular, but if you want to push the boat out, why not make your own? Fill them with their favourite nibbles; chocolates, sweets, crackers, cheese and even some bubbles. You can find picnic baskets in second hand shops and online – just make sure they will be big enough to load with plenty of treats!

Of course, spontaneity is also great. There are those ‘just because’ times when a small token of a gift brightens up a bad day. If you’re still a bit hesitant, a good idea is to keep a note of what your other half says they would like throughout the year.

Above all, be original and trust your instincts. It is, after all, the thought that counts.
