Bossing The Freelancer’s Lifestyle

Freelancing has grown in popularity greatly over the past few years, and the reasons why might well be quite diverse.

After all, the freelancer’s way of life has many profound benefits for most people, and it’s the kind of way of life which anybody can get into provided they have the right kind of skill in a certain area. It could be creative, entrepreneurial, administrative, or even advisory. Whatever your own skills are, it’s possible you could make a job out of it where you are the boss and you set the rule.s but what do you need to know first in order to be able to truly boss the freelancer’s lifestyle? As it happens, quite a lot. In this article, we are going to look at a number of the things that most freelancers would like to have known before they set out on their new career trajectory. Pay attention to the following, and you will be in good stead with regards to your fellow freelancers – and potential future clients.

Making The Jump

For most people, getting into this kind of work lifestyle weill mean making some kind of a big change from before. It might be that you have come out of university and you’re looking to put your skills to the test. Or, like many other, you might be keen to leave your 9-5 job and get into what you truly enjoy and try to make money from it. Making the jump from one to the other can be hugely terrifying, and it’s the kind of thing you only want to do if you are absolutely sure that it is likely to work out well for you. But how can you possibly know that it will, if you have never done anything like this before? Here are some of the signs that you might be ready to make the leap.

First of all, you need to be absolutely sure of your abilities – but by the very nature of the kind of people who tend to freelance, it’s likely that you never really feel absolutely sure of your abilities. So you might want to seek outside validation, to be able to see whether or not you are likely to succeed. Remember that your friends and family love you, and as such they are much less likely to give you the whole truth when appraising your work. Seek the opinions of other professionals instead, even if that means paying a small fee for their time. It will be worth it as, if nothing else, they should be able to provide you with some feedback in order to help you see where you need to improve. That alone is invaluable, and worth spending a little money on before you start your career proper.

But whether or not you are sure of your abilities, you also need to make sure that you are not going to put yourself in any great financial strife if you do make the leap. As with many other big changes in life, you should expect the best but prepare for the worst, and in this case that means preparing for failure so bad that you can’t even keep up payments on your mortgage or rent. Make sure you are not going to starve if it doesn’t immediately go to plan – but don’t go thinking that it is going to be all that difficult either.

Finally, you need to make sure that you are ready for the change in lifestyle itself. Although you are probably getting into freelancing at least in part because you are looking forward to the extra time, solo commitment and so on, you might be surprised by how much of a change it actually is, so it’s worth making sure that you are actually going to be prepared for it. As long as you are, you should be able to make that jump with much greater confidence, and if nothing else that will give you the necessary energy to carry on with your chosen path. Making the leap is a necessary and huge first step.

Honing Your Craft

No matter what stage you are at with your skills, you need to be aware that it is a case of constantly honing your abilities if you really do want to perfect them enough to make money form them. Even once you do start to earn from your skills, you need to make sure you’re putting the hours in to actually continually develop them, as this is the best way to make sure that you are going to continue to be able to earn your keep.

Plus, you will probably find that you want to do this anyway just so that you are happy with it yourself. Most freelancers have this sense of continual pushing themselves in common, and for a good reason. By honing your craft, you keep yourself in business, and keep yourself as a competitive force in the world which you are beginning to inhabit.

Taking Yourself Seriously

A big part of succeeding as a freelancer is ensuring that you actually take yourself seriously, as this is usually one of the first things you need to do in order to ensure that others are also going to take you seriously. But if you find that you are constantly harangued by a feeling of creative despair, then it is likely that this is not going to be as easy as you would like it to be. Taking yourself seriously means overcoming this sense of not being good enough, and that means firstly practising what you do, as we have already seen. You also need to make sure that you can do whatever is possible to quiet the voice in your head that says you are not good enough, as it is that voice which gts in the way and causes you to fail when you do. By taking yourself and your work seriously, you can ensure that you are going to keep the work coming in, even when it seems to be slowing to a trickle, so this is hugely important to take care of as best as you can.

Being A Business

Another big part of taking yourself seriously is ensuring that you remember you are a business, and that you need to treat yourself like one. Being a one-person business can be tough, and there are a huge number of things to consider from tax returns to competing with other ‘businesses’, so it’s something that you need to focus on clearly if you are to be able to get ahead and achieve what you want in your chosen industry. In order to be a business, you need to make sure that you look like one to the outside world, and this is actually one of the most important parts of the whole freelance process. To achieve this, you need to make sure that you have an address which looks professional – but most freelancers will not have this when they start out.

To get around that, consider using a virtual office address service, so that you can at least have some kind of permanent address which people can use. Similarly, the email address and website you use say a lot about your level of professionalism, and you need to make sure that you have one which reflects you and your skills well. The more you remember you are a business, the more you will be able to get those customers in through the door, so this is something you need to pay attention to as best as you acn from the very start.

Getting Your Name Out There

Clearly, you are always going to have to make sure that you get your name out there if you are to succeed as a freelancer, and the truth is that that is much harder than you might have thought. Most freelancers will need some kind of help here, and there are many ways to make sure that you can get that help, whether that is getting an agent to represent you or trying to ensure that you are going to be able to get the right kind of people on board.

Some freelancers even decide to have a whole small team around them, but it really depends on you and how much you think you need help in this regard. Getting your name out there is hugely important if you want to get clients, so make sure that you do not overlook this essential part of the process.

Motivation

A lot of people who get into freelancing soon discover that it is surprisingly hard to be able to motivate themselves sufficiently, and this is a hurdle you will need to master if you want to succeed in your chosen industry. Motivation is often a matter of ensuring that you can keep firmly in your mind your idea of why it is that you do what you do.

If money is enough motivation for you, then that’s great – focus on that. If not, think about what it is that your work does in the worlds which you are proud of. If you can focus on that, you are likely to feel more motivated to carry out the necessary work, and that will mean that if nothing else you do manage to produce a lot more. Do that, and your career will be much more likely to skyrocket.
