25 PRACTICAL SECRETS FOR A LOVELIER LIFE (AND YOU!)

KEEPING going with the New Year vibe still, today I’m sharing some secrets.

Woop, woop!

Of the practical kind. The stuff that has worked for me over the years. The little changes I’ve made or things I do on a regular basis which work a treat!

And which will, I promise you, help to make you and your life, a little lovelier this year. (Or perhaps a lot!)

I’m very happy to share these little golden nuggets of wisdom with you all. But. Wouldn’t it be amazing if we could grow this list too and share some more?!

If you’ve got the time, I’d love it if you’d leave one of your own nuggets in the comments below (or more if you fancy!) so we can all make our lives even lovelier, together.

Are you ready? Ok, here we go…

hat and shoes

  1. Use a good ol’ fashioned flannel with your favourite cleanser, to cleanse your face. But …make sure you use a clean one every day! It’s a little luxury anyone can afford, honest. Just hotfoot it down to Wilkos where you can pick a week’s worth of them up for just a couple of quid. It will really help improve your skin and trust me, it’s the quickest, easiest way to remove makeup and a day’s grime in seconds.
  2. Arrange the items in your wardrobe into outfits. Forget the colour coding. Forget putting all items together (such as tops, skirts etc) and just do this. It will save you time and money and will boost your style mojo. I do this for me and Elsie all the time and it works a treat.
  3. Start the day with hot water with a big squeeze of lemon in it. (Because it’s really very good for you and all that jazz.)
  4. Got your ears pierced? Then don’t leave the house without a pair of earrings in. It’s a new style rule I’ve added to my life over the past few weeks after realising how bloomin’ awful holes in ear lobes actually look! Go all out with chandelier earrings if you fancy or just keep it simple with a pair of studs.
  5. If you’ve had little sleep and look and feel like s**t, do two things. One, make yourself a decent cuppa and for the love of god, sit down for five minutes and enjoy it. And two, slick on some red lipstick. You’ll look and feel a million times better in minutes.
  6. Arrange your beloved library  (ok, mine is more like a few shelves but oh how I dream!) of books by the colour of their spine. It makes your bookshelves look so pretty.
  7. Treat yourself to fresh flowers at least once a week. You can pick up a bunch of daffs or a simple bunch of roses for just a few quid, yet the return for your home and your happiness is priceless.
  8. Read every day. Even on your busiest days. Just 15 minutes will do the trick. Your brain, creativity and imagination will love you for it.
  9. Only ever use a detangle brush on little people’s hair. (And to avoid the morning search or potential meltdowns, buy a couple at a a time.)
  10. Eat avocado! I ‘discovered’ this little green gem of a food last year and it has transformed my meals! Mash it, slice it, add to it or eat on it’s own. It’s bloody delicious.
  11. Make room in your diary. For YOU. (Like seriously, block some time out and do something with it or just do nothing at all.)
  12. When your kid can’t get stickers of a sticker sheet, peel off the sheet (the bit that surrounds the stickers) and they’ll be good to go!
  13. Write stuff down. Anywhere. On paper. On an email. On a calendar. Your brain will not remember that amazing idea or keep track of everything you need to do, trust me. I’ve lost over a hundred amazing blog ideas because of my tired brain. So get it down!
  14. Only watch TV that you love. Simple really. (Now that we have Netflix.)
  15. Turn off your phone at 8 /9pm. It’ll feel weird at first true, but life will seem much calmer and you’ll sleep better.
  16. And don’t turn it on, until you’ve got up, had some breakfast and have eased into the day. Social media and the world, can and will, wait for an hour or so. Rule it. Don’t let it rule you.
  17. Only respond to emails twice a day. (Unless you’re waiting for something really, really important.) Try early in the morning and at the end of the day. When you lose yourself in emails, you lose your own agenda for the day. So get strict. Emails waste so much time.
  18. Buy a radio and have it on in the background. It’s relaxing and comforting, particularly if you work at home like me.
  19. Be thankful. Even when you feel you’ve got diddley squat to be thankful for. It does help.
  20. Keep falling asleep with your make up on? Then take it off when you get home, early in the evening (with that flannel!) Simple.
  21. When it comes to shopping, buy less but only buy the stuff you really fall in love with. Even if you have to stretch your finances a little. If you love it, you’ll never regret it.
  22. Always look after your eyebrows. Groom them, pluck them, shape them and give them a helping hand with a little makeup. They are the frames for your face people!
  23. Stop saving stuff for ‘best’. Just STOP. Use all of it. Every day. As and when you see fit. You are worth it! And Life is too god damn short not to use the best glasses.
  24. If you can’t sleep at night (and it’s not because your little person is waking you up), use an eye mask. They’re glamorous, rather diva like and more importantly, they work! Even my husband is a fan and borrows mine occasionally. Plus they’re great for getting in a day nap too. (Remember those days?!)
  25. Finally, whenever you’re in an uncomfortable situation like a job interview, running into your ex or delivering a presentation, just remember two things – breaaaaaathe and smile. Breathe and smile and know that you will survive and that it will all soon be over.

So there’s my list! But what are YOU going to add to it?! ;-) Answers on a comment…

“25 PRACTICAL SECRETS FOR A LOVELIER LIFE (AND YOU!)”
  • Try organic bread, it’s tasty has an amazing flavour and less chemicals in your diet the better. X

  • So many great tips I should follow here hun. I am awful at ever taking my makeup off until I am about to put new makeup on in the morning that’s when I end up washing my face. EEEK I know. Screams. I love the idea of making outfits in your wardrobe but how do you do it with a pair jeans that fit forty tops? That I would love to see a tutorial on as my is currently categorized and color coded. EEEK again I know. What shall I add to your amazing list how about go decaf, same great taste without the high and crash in the afternoon, or prepared your meals on Sunday for the week, make freezer bags up for great slow cooker meals that you can just pop in at the morning time and have it yummy and ready when you walk in the door at dinner time. Lovely post. :)

    • I used to be exactly the same, until I picked up the advice about take it off at the beginning of the evening and it made such a difference!I still collapse into bed with a full face of make up after a boozy night out, but you know we can’t all be perfect all of the time, can we?! ;-) As for the outfit thing, what I do is put the pair of jeans in first and then choose a whole bunch of tops that I know a) will only go with the jeans or b) look incredible with them. The rest of the tops, I try and find other pairings for. Make sense? (I’ve had a few people ask about this so might try and do a vlog about it all soon!) Love the decaf tip! I found some decaf tea last year and loved it! And I am SO borrowing your freezer bag idea. Genius! x

  • Great list! Fresh flowers is one of those things I’ve added to mine for 2016 as it does give you such a boost. I’m a sucker for avocados, always was and always will be. Definitely scheduling time for myself and trying to switch off are on there too… the last one is super tricky but I’m going to have a stab at it! x

    • Ah I’m so glad you’ve said that Uju! I introduced weekly fresh flowers into my world last year and it changed my daily life! I discovered all kinds of flowers I’d never come across before, got creative with displaying them and it’s become a lovely weekly ritual with Elsie. As I type, i’m sat here looking at some cheery yellow daffs! x

  • Time and money stop me from doing number 7, but I feel so much happier when I see a fresh bunch of flowers in the house – I need to see it as a necessity, not an occasional luxury. And number 8, perhaps unsurprisingly for me is another staple. Couldn’t live without my literary world!

    • You need to see it is as a ‘non negotiable’ Diane (future blog post coming up!). As important as food or a cup of tea/ coffee. I bought a bunch of Daffs for just a £1 this week and they’re already brightening up my world. x

  • Fabulous points Katie! As you know I love the flannel too, it really does make such a difference to my complexion. Since using my Planner I feel much more in control – writing it down with a real pen on real paper makes a difference (not to mention all the pretty stationery involved). Oh and I love a bit of lippy! So important to find a few self-care things that help to lift you a bit xxx

    • It so is my darling. It so is! I am the least organised person I know, but I’m trying to get better and writing stuff DOWN helps! xx

  • I love the one about emails, and social media (she says whilst scrolling Twitter, before breakfast).
I write a weekly meal plan and it makes cooking and shopping so much easier!

    • Haha! Thanks Hazel and I love this ‘nugget’! It’s definitely something I need to start to do! x

  • Great list Katie! I really enjoyed it. I will be taking your advice on the flannel! I am trying to stop forgetting to take my make-up off at night. It really is not good for my skin. And yes definitely don’t save anything for best… I agree. xx

    • Thanks Tanita. I bore everyone I meet (*winks) about the flannel thing, but it really is amazing. x

  • I love this huni! The sticker thing is genius! I am so bad at taking makeup off, it normally washes off in the shower the next morning. I will try harder! Fab post lovely xxx

    • The sticker thing is so genius (I spotted it on FB yonks ago) that when I first did it for Elsie, I felt like an utter fool for not figuring it out myself a lot sooner! Try the flannel thang for taking your makeup off. It takes no time at all and gets all your make up off in one quick swoop. x

  • I do the same as you, I take my make up off once I am home for the rest of the days, so here it’s usually after the school run, unless I have someone coming over. I won’t subject them to my make up free face. ;-) I keep meaning to get myself to Wilkos or Primark to start the flannel tip, I’ve heard that a lot recently. Either you or a previous commentator have said my tips.

    • It works doesn’t it! I always nodding off at bedtime with a face full of make up (disgusting I know!). The flannel tip is the best skincare tip I’ve ever picked up honestly. Wilkos are the cheapest place I’ve found yet for flannels – just 30p a flannel! I buy a whole load of white ones and then just rotate, using one each day. x

  • Great list. Mine would be:
    1. Make sure you year a few squares of toilet paper off the roll before giving it to your toddler to amuse him
    2. No one will notice if you haven’t vacuumed today.
    3. Take a vitamin tablet every day
4.tell someone you appreciate them. Karma travels fast.

  • I love this list. Brilliant advice. When I worked my mantra was always “breathe, smile and nod”. It got me through a lot. I need to invest in some flannels and I love fresh flowers and bright lipsticks for cheering me up. I have two little pieces of advice to make life happier. One is something I learnt from Cognitive Behavioural Therapy and I practice it daily. It is to do one thing every day that brings me a sense of achievement (even if it is small, like clean out a cupboard) and one thing that makes me truly happy (a bath, read a good book, arrange to meet my BFF). My other nugget is to plan a weekend every month which you just dedicate to your family. Mr H, Little Miss H and I do this. We spend one day going on a day trip and the other being lazy and chilling at home. It is fabulous. Sorry for the essay. But thanks for the inspiring post. Hugs Lucy xxxx

  • I love this list, and think that I should get back into the habit of in myself flowers every week now I’m working at home. Not sure about the radio, I love bit of peace an quiet when there is no-on in as it is so unusual! Thanks for linking up with us for this first #sundaystars of 2016. Hope to see you next week.

    • My pleasure! Everyone should have fresh flowers in their homes I reckon. And nothing wrong with some peace and quiet! (Hey, we could all do with more of that!) x

  • This is all kinds of wonderful, I love it. I am an avid flannel user and always take my make up off each night. I feel as though my life may now change a bit thanks to the sticker tip! So simple but yet effective at stopping major sticker meltdown (it happens!) Thanks for linking uo to #thelist my lovely xx

  • Might be a very boring and practical one but I would suggest making a rough meal plan for the week with the ingredients you have in the cupboard/are about to buy. It doesn’t have to be a strict one like some suggest, not even setting days for each meal, just that you can glance at and know what you can throw together without having to worry about not having the stuff there. Thanks for linking up with #sundaystars

    • It’s a cracker of a tip Katie and something I must, must, MUST start doing. Waitrose even gave me a free meal planner thang when I did our first food shop with them, so I have no excuse! Thanks for sharing. x

    • Tracey, this is one of the best things I’ve ever heard. I LOVE THIS!! Thanks so much for sharing. Who the hell wants to be ‘grey’?! x
